Room Enclosures

Indoor or Outdoor Rooms, Screen or Glass Enclosures

Do you like the idea of a cool summer sanctuary, extra entertaining space or a cosy winter sun spot?
Then a room enclosure may be your solution. What form or shape that room takes is a matter of taste, space, budget & lifestyle. Existing rooms can be transformed or new rooms can be added. Room enclosures may be adventurous or conservative. Whether you’re considering a small office, studio, conservatorium, garden room, outdoor kitchen, or spacious entertaining area. There is no doubt that most of us can glean maximum benefit from adding an extra living area to our home.

Regardless of the style of your house, a structure such as a room enclosure can provide you with a wealth of extra living space & entertaining possibilities. Apart from all their practical uses, room enclosures are relatively easy and inexpensive to build.

Build a Green Room

The essential elements to consider when designing an outdoor room are space, comfort, lighting and accessibility.

If the room is to be enjoyed all year round, take time to plan its aspect so that it is shaded in summer but gets the sun during the winter months. Cooling summer breezes and chill winter winds also need to be taken into account.

Create structure for your room, using at least one or two `walls' and maybe a ceiling. Tall screening plants such as bamboo or a trellis can be used to give a sense of enclosure and privacy.

A `ceiling' - whether it is part of the existing structure of the house or you install a pergola or other cover - will extend the amount of time you can use the room and provide protection for furniture and fittings.
Next, work out what furniture you want in your `room'. If you are planning on having long leisurely meals with friends and family, then a large refectory-style table and comfy seating may be what you need. On the other hand, if the space is for lounging back with a cuppa and a good book, then a day bed, hammock or lounge chairs would be more appropriate.

A lined wooden box can double up as a side table and storage for cushions and throws.
Many outdoor areas can benefit from an infusion of colour. Choose your favourite colour and incorporate it into cushion designs, lanterns or even landscaping.

Install lighting to extend the hours you can enjoy your room. House lighting may be necessary to illuminate cooking areas, but solar-powered led lights and lanterns are so inexpensive that they can be used everywhere else throughout the garden or along paths.
Lastly, make sure your outdoor room is easily accessible from the house. If it is way down the back or under the house in a space where no-one usually goes, you will possibly find that the only ones who use it after a few months are the spiders!
